TOM WESTLEY has been confirmed as the man to replace Gary Ballance as England’s No3 for Third Test against South Africa.
Ballance had been struggling to recreate his county form for his country – and was then ruled out with a broken finger.
That gives Essex batsman Westley, 28, the opportunity to make his England debut at The Oval.
Middlesex batsman Dawid Malan – who made his Twenty20 debut earlier this year – has also been named in the squad.
The news does mean Mark Stoneman misses out having been widely tipped for a first call-up.
Westley has been in sublime form for Essex this term, averaging 53.11 with the bat in 2017 alone, with 478 runs, including two centuries.
Just last month, he smashed 106 not out for the England Lions against South Africa’s full-strength bowling attack.
In that scenario, it’s expected all-rounder Liam Dawson would be dropped in order to make room for the explosive left-hander.
Malan blasted 78 off just 44 balls against the South Africans in the international T20 in Cardiff last month.
So far this season, Malan is averaging 42.50 in red-ball cricket for Middlesex, with a top score of 115.
